Our latest work - National Tree Planting Day 31st July 2022
Improving the environment in the Maribyrnong River Valley – Canning St Tree Planting
There is much to do and the time for action is now. We have never had a better opportunity to take action to improve the environment.
The Maribyrnong River needs a voice
A Riverkeeper is voice for the conservation and protection of a river. They speak for the river; they work with the groups who care for the river, and they become the central voice for everyone who cares for the river when dealing with Government and major organizations.
Currently, the Yarra Riverkeeper also advocates for the Maribyrnong River and the enthusiastic Dr Nicole Kowalczyk is the Maribyrnong Officer https://yarrariver.org.au . She is leading a group that aims to create a new position, Maribyrnong Riverkeeper. The first meeting was held on the 20th of July and was well attended with representatives of support groups from the Maribyrnong and its tributaries. From this meeting, a team has been established to define the Riverkeepers role and the steps required to find candidates and to fund the position. They have the benefit of guidance from the Yarra Riverkeeper who started in a similar way and who share common issues.
Every river system should have a River Keeper and having one for the Maribyrnong will greatly increase our ability to lobby for protection and restoration of all Victorian Rivers. We encourage everyone who cares about the environment to support this goal and to help it to become a reality.
Maximum benefits will be achieved, when we have Riverkeepers for all the major rivers in Victoria and Australia
There is much to do and the time for action is now. We have never had a better opportunity to take action to improve the environment.
- There is support for action at all levels of Government and it is pleasing to see our two local State Members Ben Carrol and Danny Pearson attending.
- Many Councils, including Moonee Valley have comprehensive plans to improve their section of the river and events like this are leading the way. We encourage you to talk to MVCC Mayor, CEO, Councilors, and hard-working staff, then, learn about their plans and how you can be involved.
- There is widespread community support, and we are fortunate to have many groups and individuals continuing to take positive action.
- Rotary International, Clubs and Members are committed to Protect the Environment.

How can Rotary help
One of the most effective ways we do this, is by supporting existing environmental groups who are taking action. How can Rotary help you achieve your environmental goals? The District Governor, a future District Governor and the Chair of the District Environmental Substantiality Committee are here to support the event and to listen and learn. Talk to them and share your vision.
Rotarians are advocates for positive environmental change. The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) is dedicated to positive environmental change. Anyone one can be a member of this group that aims to provide a network and a world voice for everyone who cares for the environment.
www.esrag.org links you to the world body, www.esragoceania.org is the regional link covering Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
Two of the Regional Executives are attending today.
We also encourage everyone who cares about the environment to register for the free Rotary Environmental Newsletters, ESRAG – World news, ESRAG Oceania Regional news and Rotary District 9800 local news. They are a great way to stay informed and vehicles you can use to promote issues that concern you and your activities.
Rotary will identify environmental problems that are not being addressed, work on solutions, and then take action. Please inform us of any problems we may be able to assist with.

We are also growing gardens to encourage pollinators and photographing bees in a quest to find Native Bees in our metropolitan area.
In the spirit of improving recycling and improvement of our gardens we recommend this resource from the ABC's Gardening Australia.
