International Service

Just a little snapshot of what we in Keilor East Rotary Club, are doing on the International scene.

We are concentrating at the moment on four areas of focus, being Balibo, a remote district in Timor Leste, Cambodia, the Philippines and something we call Donations in Kind (DIK), which gathers together all sorts of items across the board that is being superseded or upgraded by various business or hospitals and which is shipped out to the various places in need.  This even includes play equipment!

Our project in Balibo is very exciting and we have joined forces with Days for Girls to provide hygiene kits for year 8 students including education about hygiene, personal care, pregnancy, and much much more.  This is allowing these girls to go to school, which before was virtually impossible.  They were also targeted for abuse and neglect. Now they are being given dignity, confidence and a future.

Our projects, and there are a few, in Cambodia, involve giving a Safe Haven for young people with handicaps or disabilities, and helping them to lead as normal a life as possible.  Also we have partnered with Care for Cambodia and other Rotary Clubs to provide clean water and toilets, to incredibly poor areas.  We are just starting our support of another Cambodian Rural School Trust Project to deliver a system for clean water in schools and the rural communities. We have also supported them in many other ways.

For our support to the Philippines, we pack together items that we send to areas to assist in child birth, which up till now has had an enormous mortality rate, through lack of clean water, hygiene and any sort basic facilities, even if there are any at all.

We know that just around the corner their will be many more things that we will hope to do and your support and ideas would always be welcome.
Some of our fundraising has been done in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Essendon. Each year we have jointly held the Moonee Valley Art Show. Held at historic North Park Mansion in Strathmore in March or April.  Art works are chosen from Gallery 247.
